Basil leaves contain disease preventing and health promoting properties.
It contains many polyphenic flavonoids
-Provide protection at the cellular level.

Orientin 

  • A potent free radical scavenger. 
  • Reduced by half the number of cancer-associated changes in cells of human blood exposed to radiation.
  • When exposed to radiation, orientin protected against lipid peroxidation in the liver 
  • Also reduced damage to the bone marrow and gastrointestinal tract. 

Vicenin

  • Carry some protection against radiation damage
  • Anti-cancer effects of novel flavonoid vicenin-2

Health benefiting Essential Oils such as 

Eugenol
(clove oil)

  • Its properties make it a good local antiseptic and analgesic
  • It also makes a good local anaesthetic for temporary relief from toothache pain

Citronellol
(dihydrogeraniol)

  • Anatural acyclic monoterpenoid. 
  • Used in perfumes and insect repellents,
  • A mite attractant.

Linalool

  • Used as a scent in 60–80% of perfumed hygiene products and cleaning agents including soaps, detergents, shampoos, and lotions.
  • Also used as a chemical intermediate. One common downstream product of linalool is Vitamin E.

  • An aroma compound
  • It also has strong antimicrobial qualities

  • A colourless liquid hydrocarbon classified as a cyclic terpene.

  • Any of three isomeric alcohols, C10H17OH, occurring naturally in the essential oils of certain plants and used as solvents in perfumes, soaps, and medicine.

These compounds are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
